Margaret Mitchell is a pioneer when it comes to testing generative AI tools for bias. She founded the Ethical AI team at Google, alongside another well-known researcher, Timnit Gebru, before they were later both fired from the company. She now works as the AI ethics leader at Hugging Face, a software startup focused on open source tools.

We spoke about a new dataset she helped create to test how AI models continue perpetuating stereotypes. Unlike most bias-mitigation efforts that prioritize English, this dataset is malleable, with human translations for testing a wider breadth of languages and cultures. You probably already know that AI often presents a flattened view of humans, but you might not realize how these issues can be made even more extreme when the outputs are no longer generated in English.

My conversation with Mitchell has been edited for length and clarity.

Reece Rogers: What is this new dataset, called SHADES, designed to do, and how did it come together?

Margaret Mitchell: It's designed to help with evaluation and analysis, coming about from the BigScience project. About four years ago, there was this massive international effort, where researchers all over the world came together to train the first open large language model. By fully open, I mean the training data is open as well as the model.

Hugging Face played a key role in keeping it moving forward and providing things like compute. Institutions all over the world were paying people as well while they worked on parts of this project. The model we put out was called Bloom, and it really was the dawn of this idea of “open science.”

We had a bunch of working groups to focus on different aspects, and one of the working groups that I was tangentially involved with was looking at evaluation. It turned out that doing societal impact evaluations well was massively complicated—more complicated than training the model.

We had this idea of an evaluation dataset called SHADES, inspired by Gender Shades, where you could have things that are exactly comparable, except for the change in some characteristic. Gender Shades was looking at gender and skin tone. Our work looks at different kinds of bias types and swapping amongst some identity characteristics, like different genders or nations.

There are a lot of resources in English and evaluations for English. While there are some multilingual resources relevant to bias, they're often based on machine translation as opposed to actual translations from people who speak the language, who are embedded in the culture, and who can understand the kind of biases at play. They can put together the most relevant translations for what we're trying to do.

So much of the work around mitigating AI bias focuses just on English and stereotypes found in a few select cultures. Why is broadening this perspective to more languages and cultures important?

These models are being deployed across languages and cultures, so mitigating English biases—even translated English biases—doesn't correspond to mitigating the biases that are relevant in the different cultures where these are being deployed. This means that you risk deploying a model that propagates really problematic stereotypes within a given region, because they are trained on these different languages.

So, there's the training data. Then, there's the fine-tuning and evaluation. The training data might contain all kinds of really problematic stereotypes across countries, but then the bias mitigation techniques may only look at English. In particular, it tends to be North American– and US-centric. While you might reduce bias in some way for English users in the US, you've not done it throughout the world. You still risk amplifying really harmful views globally because you've only focused on English.

Is generative AI introducing new stereotypes to different languages and cultures?

That is part of what we're finding. The idea of blondes being stupid is not something that's found all over the world, but is found in a lot of the languages that we looked at.

When you have all of the data in one shared latent space, then semantic concepts can get transferred across languages. You're risking propagating harmful stereotypes that other people hadn't even thought of.

Is it true that AI models will sometimes justify stereotypes in their outputs by just making shit up?

That was something that came out in our discussions of what we were finding. We were all sort of weirded out that some of the stereotypes were being justified by references to scientific literature that didn't exist.

Outputs saying that, for example, science has shown genetic differences where it hasn't been shown, which is a basis of scientific racism. The AI outputs were putting forward these pseudo-scientific views, and then also using language that suggested academic writing or having academic support. It spoke about these things as if they're facts, when they're not factual at all.

What were some of the biggest challenges when working on the SHADES dataset?

One of the biggest challenges was around the linguistic differences. A really common approach for bias evaluation is to use English and make a sentence with a slot like: “People from [nation] are untrustworthy.” Then, you flip in different nations.

When you start putting in gender, now the rest of the sentence starts having to agree grammatically on gender. That's really been a limitation for bias evaluation, because if you want to do these contrastive swaps in other languages—which is super useful for measuring bias—you have to have the rest of the sentence changed. You need different translations where the whole sentence changes.

How do you make templates where the whole sentence needs to agree in gender, in number, in plurality, and all these different kinds of things with the target of the stereotype? We had to come up with our own linguistic annotation in order to account for this. Luckily, there were a few people involved who were linguistic nerds.

So, now you can do these contrastive statements across all of these languages, even the ones with the really hard agreement rules, because we've developed this novel, template-based approach for bias evaluation that’s syntactically sensitive.

Generative AI has been known to amplify stereotypes for a while now. With so much progress being made in other aspects of AI research, why are these kinds of extreme biases still prevalent? It’s an issue that seems under-addressed.

That's a pretty big question. There are a few different kinds of answers. One is cultural. I think within a lot of tech companies it's believed that it's not really that big of a problem. Or, if it is, it's a pretty simple fix. What will be prioritized, if anything is prioritized, are these simple approaches that can go wrong.

We'll get superficial fixes for very basic things. If you say girls like pink, it recognizes that as a stereotype, because it's just the kind of thing that if you're thinking of prototypical stereotypes pops out at you, right? These very basic cases will be handled. It's a very simple, superficial approach where these more deeply embedded beliefs don't get addressed.

It ends up being both a cultural issue and a technical issue of finding how to get at deeply ingrained biases that aren't expressing themselves in very clear language.

"how do I keep my art from being scraped for AI from now on?"

if you post images online, there's no 100% guaranteed way to prevent this, and you can probably assume that there's no need to remove/edit existing content. you might contest this as a matter of data privacy and workers' rights, but you might also be looking for smaller, more immediate actions to take.

...so I made this list! I can't vouch for the effectiveness of all of these, but I wanted to compile as many options as possible so you can decide what's best for you.

Discouraging data scraping and "opting out"

robots.txt - This is a file placed in a website's home directory to "ask" web crawlers not to access certain parts of a site. If you have your own website, you can edit this yourself, or you can check which crawlers a site disallows by adding /robots.txt at the end of the URL. This article has instructions for blocking some bots that scrape data for AI.

HTML metadata - DeviantArt (i know) has proposed the "noai" and "noimageai" meta tags for opting images out of machine learning datasets, while Mojeek proposed "noml". To use all three, you'd put the following in your webpages' headers:

Have I Been Trained? - A tool by Spawning to search for images in the LAION-5B and LAION-400M datasets and opt your images and web domain out of future model training. Spawning claims that Stability AI and Hugging Face have agreed to respect these opt-outs. Try searching for usernames!

Kudurru - A tool by Spawning (currently a Wordpress plugin) in closed beta that purportedly blocks/redirects AI scrapers from your website. I don't know much about how this one works.

ai.txt - Similar to robots.txt. A new type of permissions file for AI training proposed by Spawning.

ArtShield Watermarker - Web-based tool to add Stable Diffusion's "invisible watermark" to images, which may cause an image to be recognized as AI-generated and excluded from data scraping and/or model training. Source available on GitHub. Doesn't seem to have updated/posted on social media since last year.

Image processing... things

these are popular now, but there seems to be some confusion regarding the goal of these tools; these aren't meant to "kill" AI art, and they won't affect existing models. they won't magically guarantee full protection, so you probably shouldn't loudly announce that you're using them to try to bait AI users into responding

Glaze - UChicago's tool to add "adversarial noise" to art to disrupt style mimicry. Devs recommend glazing pictures last. Runs on Windows and Mac (Nvidia GPU required)

WebGlaze - Free browser-based Glaze service for those who can't run Glaze locally. Request an invite by following their instructions.

Mist - Another adversarial noise tool, by Psyker Group. Runs on Windows and Linux (Nvidia GPU required) or on web with a Google Colab Notebook.

Nightshade - UChicago's tool to distort AI's recognition of features and "poison" datasets, with the goal of making it inconvenient to use images scraped without consent. The guide recommends that you do not disclose whether your art is nightshaded. Nightshade chooses a tag that's relevant to your image. You should use this word in the image's caption/alt text when you post the image online. This means the alt text will accurately describe what's in the image-- there is no reason to ever write false/mismatched alt text!!! Runs on Windows and Mac (Nvidia GPU required)

Sanative AI - Web-based "anti-AI watermark"-- maybe comparable to Glaze and Mist. I can't find much about this one except that they won a "Responsible AI Challenge" hosted by Mozilla last year.

Just Add A Regular Watermark - It doesn't take a lot of processing power to add a watermark, so why not? Try adding complexities like warping, changes in color/opacity, and blurring to make it more annoying for an AI (or human) to remove. You could even try testing your watermark against an AI watermark remover. (the privacy policy claims that they don't keep or otherwise use your images, but use your own judgment)

given that energy consumption was the focus of some AI art criticism, I'm not sure if the benefits of these GPU-intensive tools outweigh the cost, and I'd like to know more about that. in any case, I thought that people writing alt text/image descriptions more often would've been a neat side effect of Nightshade being used, so I hope to see more of that in the future, at least!

Criticism regarding recent CAI updates

I've been a creator/player on character.ai (or CAI for short) for at least since 2023, and recently, the site's been going through some rather controversial updates that have been mostly meant with contempt from the fanbase. While the updates were supposedly due to legal problems that may have occurred from someone going mad and dying after a chat on the program, I do think the changes fail to improve the site's quality and have been deterring people away from the site as a whole.

The more prominent criticism about CAI so far was the inability to edit posts, despite that feature being heavily praised when it was first implemented. Editing was a useful tool because it could be used to fix spelling mistakes, out of character moments, and other stuff. However, the feature had supposedly been axed recently since unlike AI outputs, the edits aren't subject to content moderation, which could allow editing to produce harmful content in the wrong hands. This aspect of the editing feature was supposedly why it was removed. I don't think removing editing just because of what could be done with it if used by the wrong people was a good choice since editing is not inherently "bad", it is simply a tool, and it can even be used to improve the quality of AI outputs. I think reporting harmful content (if it is posted publicly) would suffice better than just axing the editing tool all together because I more often than not don't post chats publicly, and frankly, if people aren't posting their CAI creations publicly, they're not any of your business. (Weirdly enough, people have reported that this editing ban has been applied rather asymmetrically, as the ban was supposedly for minors only, but even adults using the site have been subject to similar bans as well.)

Another criticism that CAI has faced recently is poorer output quality for the user-created AIs. Yeah... I have felt this. Not only do I think banning the edit feature has reduced the quality of outputs, but the output censorship has likely been facing false positives more often. People have already had issues with the output filter being especially harsh when it comes to violence, making bloodier if still safe-for-work narratives harder to make, but also the filter's quality has reduced to the point that even some kid-show friendly content like hugging and kissing has been subject to censorship. I really think the content filter is in need of some serious refinements if goddamn HUGGING is getting censored. I can confirm issues with the quality filter in person since I once I've seen the filter being triggered over things like asking if I was high or even pleading for someone to make me garlic bread. People have also been facing issues with being timed out for 24 HOURS due to repeatedly triggering the content filter. The time out feature, while likely implemented to deter people from making bad content, was honestly poorly implement because not only is it preventing people from playing due to something the AI did and not themselves, but the poorer filter quality means that people are at risk of encountering a time-out even if they play safe.

One last criticism I have regarding the site is that ability to provide feedback on the program is rather shoddy. I did recently contact support regarding issues regarding the editing feature being axed for most players, and I have yet to receive any sort of response in 3 days. It also turned out that CAI had an OFFICAL Discord server, but unfortunately the moderation there is also quite poor in quality, with innocent messages simply asking for changes that they think would improve the program getting blocked for supposedly violating the server's ban on not-safe-for-work content. I think the bad auto moderation is making it hard for people's critiques on CAI from being heard, which is why I've ended up turning to Tumblr to bring up my concerns regarding the program.

I often just force it! Your first draft is never going to be the final one so writing a shitty first draft is much better than not writing at all. Otherwise, I reach out to friends who read my writing to brainstorm with them, bounce ideas around, get insight. Even if someone thinks they have a 'shitty idea', it can sometimes spark something else that is the solution!

I try to just write the entire fic/chapter first before worrying about editing. Then, I give it a once over myself and sometimes read it out loud to make sure it makes sense. I make sure everything I write applies to my plot, theme, or characters to avoid rambling about useless things. If there is a wordy paragraph, I might put it through an AI tool to help make sure its clear and concise (never to use it to write for me!!). Finally, I sent it over to my beta readers for a last re-read.

Easiest was probably Little Bit of Luck because that was just pwp and I just rambled that one into my docs. Hardest would be LLOID (solely because she's a big one and I'm writing this one with the mindset of potential publication so I want her to be as polished and perfect as I can make it with serious themes and characterization and development) or In The Middle (because writing more than two people makes smut quite tricky to keep everyone on track and equally described!)

Video Generation AI Tools:

Descript transcribes your videos into a script. Then, instead of using a timeline to trim the audio and video tracks, you edit the text script. As you do so, the video gets trimmed automatically. The rest of the editing works in a similar way, cutting the time to edit your talking head videos.

Mistral AI has pulled back the curtain on Magistral, their first model specifically built for reasoning tasks.

Magistral arrives in two flavours: a 24B parameter open-source version called Magistral Small that anyone can tinker with, and a beefier enterprise edition, Magistral Medium, aimed at commercial applications where advanced reasoning capabilities matter most.

“The best human thinking isn’t linear—it weaves through logic, insight, uncertainty, and discovery,” explains Mistral AI.

That’s a fair point, existing models often struggle with the messy, non-linear way humans actually think through problems. I’ve tested numerous reasoning models and they typically suffer from three key limitations: they lack depth in specialised domains, their thinking process is frustratingly opaque, and they perform inconsistently across different languages.

Mistral AI’s real-world reasoning for professionals

For professionals who’ve been hesitant to trust AI with complex tasks, Magistral might change some minds.

Legal eagles, finance folks, healthcare professionals and government workers will appreciate the model’s ability to show its work. All conclusions can be traced back through logical steps—crucial when you’re operating in regulated environments where “because the AI said so” simply doesn’t cut it.

What separates Magistral from run-of-the-mill language models is transparency. Rather than simply spitting out answers from a black box, it reveals its thinking process in a way users can follow and verify.

This matters enormously in professional contexts. A lawyer doesn’t just want a contract clause suggestion; they need to understand the legal reasoning behind it. A doctor can’t blindly trust a diagnostic suggestion without seeing the clinical logic. By making its reasoning traceable, Magistral could help bridge the trust gap that’s held back AI adoption in high-stakes fields.

Having spoken with non-English AI developers, I’ve heard consistent frustration about how reasoning capabilities drop off dramatically outside English. Magistral appears to tackle this head-on with robust multilingual support, allowing professionals to reason in their preferred language without performance penalties.

This isn’t just about convenience; it’s about equity and access. As countries increasingly implement AI regulations requiring localised solutions, tools that reason effectively across languages will have a significant advantage over English-centric competitors.

As organisations increasingly demand AI that can explain itself – particularly in Europe where the AI Act will require transparency – Magistral’s focus on showing its reasoning process feels particularly timely.
